What:  This is a 2-year, multi-session program providing the essentials in library skills. The                                    individual sessions are presented by professionally qualified individuals. Formal presentation of the topic is supplemented with discussion based on the experiences of  working librarians.
Who:   Full time, part time, volunteer librarians and library staff in Catholic elementary                                            schools of the St. Louis Archdiocese.

1.         WELCOME AND REVIEW OF ARCHDIOCESAN POLICIES.                         Wed., Oct. 19, 2011
            GUIDELINES FOR YOUR LIBRARY POLICY HANDBOOK.                              9:00 A.M.-12 noon
Denise Bram, Director of Elementary School Improvements, will give an opening address   followed by                   Sr. Barbara L. Payne, C.PP.S., who will talk about compiling a policy handbook that includes your library’s mission, philosophy and goal statements, line of authority and responsibility, selection policy, policies on gifts, circulation rules, objection to material, etc.

2.         MAINTAINING YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTION                                             Thurs., Dec. 1, 2011                                                                                                                                                                             9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Sr. Barbara L. Payne, C.PP.S., will lead a discussion on inventory, gifts, weeding, repairs,  bindings, replacements, sources for books and other media, and related topics.

3.         BUILDING A RECOMMENDED READING LIST                                               Tues., Feb. 7, 2012
                                                                                                                                           9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Jo Ann Holdener will guide us through recommended titles to compile a booklist.  Bring a list of your top ten books in grades 1-3, ten more titles for grade levels 4-6, and the same for   grades 7-9. All books should have copyrights between 2009 and 2011. Be ready to book talk your favorites.

Registration fee is $15 per session.

Light refreshments are available at 8:45 a.m. You are welcome to bring a sandwich to eat during a break if you feel the need of food. There are usually two 15-minute breaks during each session.

It is recommended you bring to the sessions School Media Center, A Handbook for Elementary Libraries,  5th ed., by the Greater St. Louis Chapter of CLA. Copies may be purchased at the sessions.

A Certificate of Attendance will be provided for those who attend three or more sessions of the 2-year cycle. A Professional Development Report is available at each session for anyone requesting it.
